Which type of roof shape and surface material are the safest against hurricanes?
Posted by admin in Metal roofing materials on 12 31st, 2008I've been investigating this topic for our home renovation but can't seem to get a clear recommendation on any of these options:
- Roof options: Gable, Flat, etc
- Material: Shingles, Tile, Metal, etc
If there isn't one ideal choice, what are the trade-offs between each option?
Greatly appreciate your help. Thanks.
THE BEST ROOF SHAPE is an all hipped roof with small overhangs.
Some steel roofs are warranted to 175mph, some archetcheral shingles to 150mph
Make sure all rafter ties are secure. FEMA has a handbook that you can download. It really has a lot of help full suggestions.
You can find the "Fact Sheets" at www.fema.gov.
I just built a shop. I used low profile 26ga. steel roofing.

What is a Carbon Footprint?
What are the trade offs of using solar panels versus green roofs? Which is more appropriate for a prairie climate flat roof or pitched roof? What green products can be used on each type? How?
what building materials provide the best insulation? What are the trade offs in using the most efficient materials?

what is the density of a cement tile roofing?

roughly concrete weighs 2400 kilograms per cubic meter. get the volume (length x width x height) of each tile, in meters, and multiply by 2400 = weight in kilograms. Multiply the number of tiles by the tile weight and you get your total roof load.
