Replacing the headliner, how easy is it???
Posted by admin in Metal roofing materials on 01 31st, 2009I have an '87 Volvo 740GL estate and the headliner is totally trashed,i want to replace it myself as there is no one in my town that re-apolster (sp?)cars.Has anyone had experience in doing this to their car and is it very easy to do?Is the material on a board that attatches to the roof or is is just stuck straight to the metal?
unable to take the plastic supports down as because of the age of the car, they are very fragile and prone to cracking/snapping.
it is usually spray glued to an preformed composite board. You will have to look for the material, then I would reccomend 3m spray adhesive. You will have to take down all of the Plastic/Vinyl trim that leads up to it and helps support it though……Good Luck Ken

read comments (1)Fixing Downpipe on roof tile?
Posted by admin in Tile roofing on 01 31st, 2009I have to run 2 lengths (total length 3m) of downpipe across the roof of an extension. This to avoid water running onto the roof, which cause leakage due to large amount of rain water. Can anyone suggest how should I fix the downpipe onto the roof-tile without having to drill it (it would sound a daft idea). So how can I fix the downpipe onto the roof without it being blown away by high wind. Much appreciated for any suggestions!
i,ve done this
get a metal coat hanger and cut it into 8" lengths, bend in the middle to form a vee shape.
get some large tie wraps and put them around the waste and fasten the cut lengths to the pipe in a straight line.
push the bent pieces of wire up into the tiles firmly and the tiles will hold it in place.
do this on a dry day and mastic it in for added security
don,t worry about it rusting, it will be a lot of years before this will affect the metal

why is iron used for temporary roofing and copper used as a roofing material for large buildings?
Posted by admin in Roofing Materials on 01 31st, 2009Any help would be appreciated.
iron (steel) = temporary because it's cheap but will rust away rather fast. Even galvanized or stainless steel (steel coated with other metals) will rust quickly once the coating is scratched.
copper = permanent because it is more expensive but not very expensive, and it will last forever with no maintenance once the green patina forms.
Water will not eat away at copper metal by way of rusting it to oxides like it does with iron metal, since copper is very inert. Copper does very slowly react with acidic compounds in the air (sulfuric acid, carbonic acid, water) and form copper coordination compounds having copper in the Cu(II) oxidation state. These compounds make a rock-hard, waterproof layer that protects the rest of the copper from corroding. That's why you can see old copper roofs and statues that look just like they did 400 years ago.
