Posted by admin in Metal roofing materials on 04 24th, 2009Can anyone help me out with this calculus question
A silo must be designed to hold pi * 10,000 ft^3. The silos are to be right circular cylinders with a hemispheric roof. The sheet metal that the walls of the cylinder must be constructed with costs $1/ft^2. The roofing material costs $3/ft^2 and the flooring costs $2/ft^2. Find the dimensions of the storage silo that will minimize construction costs.
////////
v=10000pi=2/3pir³+pir²h
dr/dh=(10000/r²)-(2r/3)
cost=2pirh+2pir²+6pir²
=2pi(rh+4r²)
using volume, find h=10000/r²-2r/3
plug into cost formula and do c'
=8pir-20000/r²
c'=0 for crit points
r=9.267
For dimensions:radius is 9.267, height of cyclinder is 110.27

We need to replace roofing material-shingles or the metal ones that seem to be getting popular-?
Posted by admin in Roofing Materials on 04 24th, 2009We have a simple 2 story farmhouse in the midwest US. Anyone have pros and cons on roofing materials, as to cost, durability, etc.? Thanks a bunch!
a good shingle roof is fine. but with the price of petroleum based products going so high, a metal roof may be more economical in the long run.

What do you call the cosmetic covering around a pre fab fireplace on the roof.?
Posted by admin in Metal roofing materials on 04 16th, 2009Live in FL. We have a firelplace but it's one of those pre fab types, real but not stone or brick just a metal insert. The exhaust goes up to the roof in a tube and this is surrounded by some decorative wood. I know there is a name for it but don't know what to call it. I need to change it to metal or some type of material that won't rot in the FL humidity but don't know what to call it.
The name for the decorative wood or material that surrounds the flue…on a real chimney it's stone, but this is a pre fab and they must have a name for it.
Is it the surround, the flue, the pipe or the roof jack?
