There are five main types of roofing materials that can be used to cover a home. Each of these different types offers their own unique benefits. Since each type has a specific use, understanding them is an important step before you install them.
Metal Roofing
Metal Roofing is one of the strongest roofs available . It is strong and durable and can handle the elements well. When it is properly installed it can last the lifetime of a home. In addition it provides superior fire resistance, so you don’t have to worry about it contributing to a house fire. In fact, helps to keep your home cooler this will in turn save you a bundle on your energy costs. On the negative side these roofs are more costly to install than other roofs. In some cases they have been known to become dented if hit by a tree in a storm and can be a costly repair. If installed incorrectly they can be difficult to repair and provide leaks and other nuances as well.
Tiles
Tiles often last a very long time, and when properly maintained can give your home a more modernized or southwestern look depending on the style of your home. Tile won’t burn or rot away, and it can withstand the worst insect attacks. On the downside these tiles can become so heavy on your home that an addition might have to be added to your roof to support the weight. This can prove to be costly, and often people find that they could have saved money going other routes. In addition, walking on a tile roof can be difficult since these tiles tend to break easily, however many people consider tiles to be one of the best roofing materials.
Spray On Roofing Materials
Spray on Roofing is an inexpensive approach to roofing but it isn’t always the best. On the plus side you can roof your fairly cheaply. Slopes and other odd angles can be handled without much concern and it can last a long time in certain conditions. The downside is that many things can begin to break down the foam. Areas that have wildlife such as bird and squirrels will find the integrity of these roofs quickly jeopardized. In cases where you are on the roof often, your walking will break this type of roofing down.
Solar Roofing Material
Unlike solar panels this type of roofing proves to be less obtrusive and helps to aid the home with renewable energy. While they are expensive to install, they begin to pay for themselves with electricity saved. In addition, you might be able to get a check from your local power company for power you supply. Of course there is a downside to this as well. Your hardware might not be supportive of the new type of power and new outlets will need to be installed. Because you might live in a region with little sunlight they won’t help to offset much cost.
Shingles
Easily affordable and a clean appearance, many people choose this style for their roof and think shingles are the best roofing materials. They can handle most weathers and are easy to afford if they need to be replaced. You can walk on them with no risk of damage and they are fire proof. On the negative side, they blow off often in very strong winds. In addition, they can scar if walked on while hot, finally they don’t have the same quality look that other materials have.
It is often a good idea to review all your available options when it comes to roofing. Decide which type of roof will work best in your area, consider the environment when possible to decide upon the best roofing materials for your building.
