METAL ROOFING, how to find/get the best but not pay more than for asphalt shingles.?
Posted by admin in Metal roofing materials on 03 11th, 2010A lot of shingles that are architectural rated, cost out of the wazoo. I was wondering if I could get someone (and are commercial builders the best) to put on a metal roof for about the same cost as a good asphalt roof? I hear it takes less skill, and less time, and the materials don’t really cost that much more…that it’s just that metal is "in" now that is making it so much more costly.
Any ideas how I should approach the contractor, without ticking them off, to inquire about getting it done for the same price?
I want to put a roof on and be done with it. I am wondering if metal is the way to go. But I am hearing about nails/ screws backing up! Paint peeling off!
Now, I am reading, all these years I should have been having my roof inspected yearly to make sure the warranty stayed in effect!!! AND that I am going to have to have this done for either asphalt OR metal roofing! How much should this cost?
I am in the southeast.
How much should roofing cost by the square foot to put on? I have a very low pitch ranch home, about 1700 sq feet. Only one valley. One chimney on the end. Built about 1970.
I think the plywood under the existing shingles is about 1/2 inch. Should I get it replaced? What is code now?
Since my home is older, are there any upgrades I should make while the roof is off to make it more energy efficient, or stronger?
Know I have asked a lot of questions, but I will appreciate your help and knowledge very much and share it where I can in the future. So you will help more than me.
Thank you.
One question you may ask is your home owners insurance guy. The rates for metal roof may be cheaper than asphalt shingles. The cost, if more for a metal roof may be cheaper on insurance.

I need help with my background research!?
Posted by admin in Metal roofing materials on 02 18th, 2010regional science fair is in seven days and i was wondering if this sounded good for my background research paper?
The possibilities for a roof are infinite. There are several different systems
available, shingle, metal, tile and the most recent invention of green roofing
are good examples. Each roof type has a number of colors and styles to choose
from. The shingle roof is most commonly applied due to its moderate price and
its extensive warranty. A drawback to the shingle is in sunny environments the
UV Rays can cause premature deterioration. The next most commonly applied roof
is the tile roof. Its desirable appearance and actual roof life of 30 to 35
years entices people to choose this type of roof. The flaw with a tile roof is
the material tends to degrade faster than the tile its-self, voiding the roof
warranty. The metal roof is common in Florida due its tropical style, and its
desirable because of its exceptional warranty of 50 years. A disadvantage of
this roof type is the coastal climate has a lot of corrosive effects on the
metal causing it to break down prematurely. Lastly, the recent discovery of
vegetative roofs, also referred to as “green” roofs, has become extremely
popular in large cities, for commercial buildings, due to its ability to keep a
building cooler, offset the greenhouse affect, and save up to 20 percent on an
electric bill. Vegetative roofing is not popular among residential communities
due to the exuberant cost. If prices become more reasonable or it becomes
government subsidized it has the potential to be more widely used in the future.
What is the point of your science project? That is, what aspect of roofs are you studying? You have included some information about how long they last and how economical they might be. At what point does science or engineering come into the picture?
A roof is supposed to protect whatever is under it from the weather. How does one design do a better job than another?
What you have posted here sounds sort of like a primer on roofing types that Home Depot might offer on a brochure.

a) zinc+ sulphuric acid —->
b) sodium + nitric acid —->
c) copper + hydrochloric acid —–>
4. Write symbol equations for the reactions in question 3. Balance them if necessary
3. Write a word equation for the reaction between magnesium and iron oxide.
2. Use your knowledge of reactivity to explain the following
a) Gold is used for electrical wiring in satellites
b) Iron nails last much longer when painted
c) Lead and copper can be used as roofing materials
d) Acid bottles are never made of magnesium
3. "The reactivity of a metal is connected with the date when it was discovered". Say whether you agree with this statement and explain.
3)
a) —>Zinc sulphate + Hydrogen
b)—>Sodium Nitrate + Hydrogen
c)—>Copper chloride + Hydrogen
3)"The reactivity of a metal is connected with the date when it was discovered" bcoz the noble (rarely reacting) metals like platinum, gold and silver were know since the ancient time as they are always available in free form. Reacting metals are difficult to be obtained, So only chemists can make them by using sophisticated methods.
