Best material to use on a roof for our deck?
We our covering our deck with a roof. We were wondering if anyone has any suggestions on which material to use out of the three. Metal, PVC, or Fiberglass? We are afraid that the metal will be too hot and make our deck a sauna, is this true? And what about the wear and tear on PVC and Fiberglass, does it crack easily after a few years in direct sun and snow?
I had the fiberglass for about 20 yrs but got alot of mildew because of it being so porous, have had the PVC panels now for about 10 yrs with the translucent color and it's bright and airy. I live in the northeast and it took the snow very well, my joist's are 2 ft apart and 10 ft long spanning an area that's 10×25 feet. I purchased mine at Lowes because home depot didn't meet my expectations in the quality. It still looks like day one and if you'd like to see a picture feel free to e-mail me, good luck Les the painter

Why doesn't North America Start building more inorganic houses verses organic homes?
Depends on what is important to you. If cost is your primary concern, corrugated metal is cheap. Noisy, hot, if not white, but cheap. Fiberglass can be translucent and so let in light and is fairly cheap and only a little noisy. Wood underlayment, roofing felt, and asphalt shingles are more work but are quiet and last a long time. PVC should be economical, translucent and last a good while, still a little noisy though.

All three have pluses and minuses. Is the deck in an area where trees can damage the roof. If not, and you have a nickel or two, you might want to look into inert gas double insulated plastic panels. Similar to double hung windows. gives you a clear roof panel that allows all of the sun, but blocks all the direct blazing heat from the sun.
All three of your choices are relatively inexpensive. You are going to get more heat from the metal and fiberglass. More light from the PVC and fiberglass. More wear from the metal and fiberglass.
God Bless

The PVC and Fiberglass will both deteriorate with time. You are correct about the metal. The "best" is to go with a "regular" roof. That is 2×4 with plywood deck and asphalt shingles. That is what I have covering my patio. It have been up for 10 years with no problems at all. Spend the extra money now and you will save in the long run.

Depends on how big your deck is, but a friend just installed a canvas covering which can be pulled back or lowered as needed. This also allows you to decorate or change it as you want. Idea is similar to those on side of motorhomes. Understand it's not one of the three you planned on using.

I suggest a medium guage fluted metal roofing panel secured to 1''by3''s 2' on center running perpendicular to the roof joists.Be sure to use self tapping screws w/rubber gasket long enough to go from the top of the flutes to the bottom of the 1''by3''.
