How can I make a plant bed out of recycled materials?
I was going to plant a garden out in my backyard this year, until my mom reminded me of all the woodchucks we get in the summer!
I’ve spent around $30 on seeds, and now I’m afraid if I plant them out back, everything will get eaten!
So now I’m looking into building some plant beds.
There is a portion of our roof that is pretty low to the ground. It can be reached from our porch. I thought I could put a strawberry plant bed, and a carrot plant bed up there.
Then I want to make some raised plant beds to put other places in the yard.
I’m trying to think of materials I could re-use and turn into these plant beds. Materials I might have laying around, or could get off craigslist fairly cheap.
Any ideas?!
I’ve heard of using recycled car tires. But apparently you’re not supposed to use them for edibles because of metals that end up contaminating the soil? So I suppose that rules that idea out.
I’ve used plastic kiddie pools and old bookcases (on the ground, with the backs knocked off) as plant beds.
I pick up used 5-gallon buckets from restaurants and stores sometimes; they make good tomato planters (1 tomato plant per bucket). You can also use the 5-gallon buckets to make strawberry and herb planters by putting holes in the side for the plants and have a perforated plastic shaft down the middle for watering.
You can make homemade self-watering Earthbox-style planters from plastic bins (see link below).
You can use galvanized or heavy plastic cans or troughs.
You can get wooden boxes and line them with heavy plastic.
You can build frames with wood left over from other projects, obtained from construction sites or from dismantling shipping pallets.
Some people do use rubber car and truck tires (see link below), with or without a sealant inside.
Virtually anything that will hold dirt can be used to make a garden bed. Use your imagination!
