Mold was on the ceilings in my 1970 mobile home, which was removed with bleach. Can the ceilings be painted?

The ceilings I believe are original to the 1970 mobile home. There were leaks from the roof where rain water came in. The mold had been on the ceilings for about a year or more. All the mold did not come off with the bleach. I plan on getting some Kilz primer to put on the ceilings before I paint them. The ceilings seem to be a drop ceiling from metal bars. The ceiling panels seem to be made of some sort of styrofoam material.

Make sure water source is taken care of(leak), clean best you can w bleach, allow to dry a few days, prime w Kilz or Zinsser primer, allow to dry, paint with a latex paint color of ur choice—I would use a roller. I’d paint panels and metal bars at once.
to make it easier, if also painting side walls and are using a light color, paint ceiling same color as side walls…

First you need to ensure that there are no more leaks in the roof, otherwise you will continue to have the same problem.

Look into the cost of replacing the acoustic tiles (I’m pretty sure that those tiles aren’t asbestos as I think they stopped allowing that as a building material by the late 60′s). Replacing the acoustic tiles may be significantly cheaper than painting over them and less labor-intensive, too.

Link below is for 24 x 24 replacement ceiling tile as cheap as $3.95 a square.

If you can prime it you can paint it, but painting it won’t keep the mold from coming back. The ceiling probably will look good for a while, then you’ll see the fungus returning. At that point you can repaint again, or you can take the time to try to get rid of the mold now or replace the drop ceiling.

The CDC has one of the most thorough sites around about mold remediation, see http://www.cdc.gov/mold/cleanup.htm
