Can you use siding on a roof with a normal pitch, instead of roofing materials?
We are putting a new roof on our garage and doing the work ourselves. We want to put on a metal roof as we did on our house a few years ago. However, I would like to find something more decorative than just the plain metal roof, since the garage & roof are in close proximity to our deck and is very visible from the house. We looked into the new metal shakes, etc., but they are very costly. So before we just give up and go with the plain metal roofing sheets, I was wondering if we could find some decorative siding (vinyl, etc) and put it on the roof instead of the sheets of plain metal roofing. The roof will be going over an existing shingle roof that is starting to lose a lot of it's shingles. Would the siding be able to shed water, snow, etc. like a metal roof would? We live in Indiana. What do you think?
Nope, and if the shingles are deteriorating that badly you really should strip them off and check out the sheething underneath. Chances are the plywood is also shot and needs replacing.

You may want to check with the building code and inspector before doing this. Asphalt and metal heat up and cool down to melt snow, this would be a deterrent to vinyl.

It will leak like hell!

When ya try to take short cuts and save—you end up paying in the long run.
DO IT RIGHT–take the old off and replace it. You can get affordable shingles with so many years warranty.

Definitely not.
Roof shingles overlap each other at least 5-6" where siding is only about 1-2" You need that protection or water/snow would back up under siding. if you want something really decorative try cedar shakes. expensive though.
Sound like your best bet is sticking with some sort of metal roofing.
Good Luck!!!!!!!

NO! Siding is NOT roofing, it will leak, and cost you ALOT by the time your done. Take the old roofing completely off down to the plywood, put new paper up, and re shingle or use the metal roofing. Metal roofing is available in colors, it may be costly as you put it, but doing the job cheap and sloppy by cutting corners will cost you more.
