What size lumber would I use to span 20 ft. on a shed roof 2/12 slope & metal roofing material?

Is it ok to space rafters on 4′ and use 2×4 on their edge, on 2′ centers as is done in pole barns. I am wanting to build a 20×30 shed roof on the end of my existing 30×50 work shop for rv storage as cheaply as possible.

According to "Modern Carpentry," my textbook from carpentry school, the following guidelines are given for a 20-ft span:

2" x 8" 16" on center with Group I lumber.

2" x 10" 24" on center with Group I lumber.

you can use 2×4 and put them on 24” centers. as that is how almost all home roofs with trusses are designed.

heres the deal . on a shed that long and wide you can’t go over 24 in spacing on the rafters . even though the metal roof does weigh as much as other roofs if you go with the metal directly to the joists then you can use 2x4s if you plan on ply sheeting the roof then you must go up to 2×6 for durability. the span is long and can twist on you if it gets to heavy.so put 2×4 beween the joists every so often to stabalize your structure and you will be fine . stagger them
